Introduction
Major of French Language and Literature
Of the many different countries in the world, France has had a particularly large cultural influence on Korea and though France follows the cultures of many different countries in Europe, it still maintains its own unique tradition.
Relationships with Korea are accelerating because of Korea-EU FTA agreement and therefore, we will continue to maintain our position as positive companions in the international society.
Under these national relationships, the Department of French Language and Literature will continue to place efforts in the general understanding of France and to transmit the knowledge and grounding needed for cultural exchanges through systematic language courses.
Major of German Language and Culture
Our department, which has inherited humanistic traditions, places its educational objective in fostering universal education and leading personalities, while training experts in German that can actively participate in the modern tides of globalization.
At the same time, students can take courses in German conversation and reading, Translation of German writings and research in German language and literature in order to enhance their abilities to understand Western culture, including that of Germany's, as well as to have a criticizing and creative receptiveness as a Korean.
The academic objectives are:
First, to train conversation abilities under skilled faculty and to enhance abilities to employ conversational German and academic German.
Second, in the case of German literature classes, to help students understand German literature, literary prose and German culture.
Third, in the case of German language classes, students learn the German development process and linguistic functions to hone their skills in using modern German.
Fourthly, to positively perform academic discussion and writing practices for students in small group.
History
Major of French Language and Literature
This was established as the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of French Language and Literature on October 7, 1978. After the separation of the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Sciences, it became the College of Liberal Arts Department of French Language and Literature. In 1999, it was integrated with the Department of German Language and Literature to become the College of Liberal Arts Department of Western Language and Literature, but in 2005, it was returned to the College of Liberal Arts Department of French Language and Literature. There are currently a total of 158 students, including 37 freshmen, 34 sophomores, 37 juniors and 50 seniors.

After the separation of the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Sciences, it became the College of Liberal Arts Department of German Language and Literature. In 1999, it was integrated with the Department of French Language and Literature to become the College of Liberal Arts Department of Western Language and Literature, but in 2005, it was returned to the College of Liberal Arts Department of German Language and Literature. There are currently a total of 146 students, including 36 freshmen, 37 sophomores, 33 juniors and 40 seniors.

Major of German Language and Culture
There is growing number of fields for employment since the reunification of Germany. Some go into trade, banks, airlines, translation, interpretation, teacher or public employees, while other find employment with publishing or magazine companies.
In particular, there are many overseas study opportunities because Germany does not require overseas students to pay for classes.

- A course intended to provide training and practice in all the language skills of French, with an initial emphasis on listening and pronunciation. Special attention to structure and vocabulary acquisition. Recommended for students with little or no previous study of French.
1- 1 - BASIC GERMAN(1)
- This course is intended to practice basic pronunciations, vocabularies, grammars of German for the beginners.
1- 1 - CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING
- The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."
1- 1 - SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
- 1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

- This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). - Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

- Through typology of French verbal constructions, the course develops students' proficiency in understanding grammatical structures of French Language. Additional attention paid to grammar review and vocabulary acquisition.
2- 1 - FRENCH CULTURE AND HISTORY
- This class is a course to study French history and explore various aspects of modern French culture. Students will examine important events in French history from the Middle Ages to the present day, and further learn various genres of French culture today.
2- 1 - FRENCH READING
- This course is aimed at improving the ability to read and understand texts for students who have learned the basic grammar of French. Through texts related to daily life, students will learn useful words and expressions in real life, and furthermore, they will practice patterns that can be spoken, thereby laying the foundation for speaking and writing.
2- 1 - FRENCH CONVERSATION I
- Initiation to French pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar to build basic sentences. For this purpose, audiovisual aids for phonetic recognition and a textbook will be used.

- The purpose of this course is to confirm the concept of digital humanities and contents and examine their developmental application in line with the current trend of changes in humanities research and learning methods. In addition, it is intended to stimulate interest in related fields in the future to promote new research activities. The content of the course is divided into four areas. First, the field of digital storytelling. Focusing on digital media, the concept of storytelling and its various communication forms and characteristics will be examined. Second, the field of digital language processing. An overview of the language processing process from corpus-based language analysis to text mining. Third, the humanities data mining and analysis field. Learn basic data collection and analysis techniques. Fourth, the field of electronic maps and digital mapping. Check the concept of GIS and review digital mapping through the combination of geographic information and humanities information.

In order to help students cope adequately with the French essay writing task in the Exam for the License of Teachers, this course presents a variety of theories and skills in the field of French education, which ultimately helps them to enrich their background knowledge. - This course is designed for the junior and senior level students in major of European Language and Culture to understand theoretical knowledge and also to practice the major knowledge at the same time. With this course, focusing on the learning basic program utilization skills for digital contents production, the students will produce cultural contents in Europe (Germany and France) using blogs or YouTube.

- In this course, the students will learn German Adverting and theire communication and language. Learning objectives are followings: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the different approaches to understanding advertising and their communication, including the fields of semantic, rhetoric. 2. Demonstrate knowledge of the essential elements of Product-Consumer Communication. 3. Analyse various ads from Germany by using different methods from communication, linguistics and rhetoric.

- Introduction to methods and techniques employed in investigation and reporting educational problems. Suggested for all candidates in education for undergraduate degrees. In addition, this course deals with methodological issues and problems in education.
3- 2 - NORSE MYTHOLOGY
- Norse mythology, the most widely known among Germanic myths, contains a Nordic worldview that is different from Greek and Roman mythology. In this class, we examine the current meaning of Norse mythology by focusing on the main narratives of Norse mythology and its modern transformation.
3- 2 - UNDERSTANDING OF GERMAN MEDIA
- This course focuses on interrogating the theoretical, historical, and technological foundations of contemporary German media studies. The course is designed to provide key concepts and the technological literacy on the basis of discourses developed by Bertolt Brecht, Walter Benjamin, Friedirch Kittler and Niklas Luhmann.
3- 2 - PRACTICE OF GERMAN TRANSLATION(1)
- This module aims to practice German language by using new multimedia such as Internet, Web, Blog, Twitter. The students will practice German language through watching, listening to, and talking about the excerpts from the new media and magazine articles etc., whereby the class will encourage students to participate in classroom learning process to promote the learner-centered learning. In this class, student's presentation will be also videotaped in order to be used in evaluating the student's linguistic performance.

- Making foundation to understand Art History and Literary Theories of europe through total understanding about european art works and cultures.
4- 2 - EUROPEAN FILM MOVEMENTS
- In this class, we look at the films of a group of European directors who shared specific artistic goals and attitudes at a specific time. Through this, the dynamics within the film industry and the interrelationship between the film and society/history are understood.
4- 2 - GERMAN AND EUROPEAN CULTURE CAPITAL
- This course is for students who are enthusiastic about german and european cities and their culture and it provides students with basic german and european life and culture. This course are made to improve the understandings of German and European cities and culture. Furthermore, it will give us to the European cities through the discussion of their history, architecture, art, festival and environment. Based on this, it provides an opportunity to compare the cultural cities in Germany and Europe to the cities in Korea and Asia.
